The data compiled by the Council of Ontario Universities shows a rising trend of higher Grade 12 averages among students entering first-year programs, particularly in competitive fields like business, engineering, and biological sciences. The reasons behind this trend include efforts to improve equity, the elimination of streaming, and an influx of families prioritizing academic achievement due to shifts in immigration. The COVID-19 pandemic also played a role, leading to a significant increase in grades, possibly due to changes in assessment methods and increased emphasis on marks. However, inflated grades pose challenges for universities in predicting student success and deciding whom to admit.
